MADS LANGE(1807 - 1856)
Was a Danish 'gentleman pirate', nicknamed the 'King of Bali' and the first imporant trader and entepreneur on the island. He built an empire trading opium, rice and spices and was a famous and very successful mediator between the different local kings and the then Dutch colonists. He died young, legend has it that he was poisoned and is buried in Kuta, South Bali.
THE BALI TIGER
Budi (one of the villa staff) is the grandson of the Balinese who helped the Dutch hunters to shoot the very last Bali tiger (Panthera tigris balica) in the next village in 1938. Since then, sightings of tigers have been reported but no actual animals have been caught, so sadly this sub-species of tiger is now extinct.
